Tawny Port
Quinta do Infantado's story starts in 1816, when Portuguese crown heir D. Pedro IV — the "Infante" — established this estate in the Cima Corgo, widely considered the finest sub-region of the Douro Valley for Port production. The quinta has stayed in the same family ever since and is one of the rare Port estates to bottle and sell its own wines directly, rather than selling to the major shippers.
The grapes here are estate-grown on steep, schist-terraced hillsides at A-grade classified sites — the Douro equivalent of grand cru. The Tawny is made from the traditional blend: Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Barroca, hand-harvested, partly destemmed, and fermented in lagares. Fermentation is stopped with 77% ABV grape brandy, and the wine is aged in old 550-liter pipas, the tall barrels that encourage the slow oxidation that gives Tawny Port its signature amber-nutty character.
The glass is tawny amber with brick-orange edges. Aromas of dried fig, roasted almond, orange peel, and caramel. On the palate it's medium-sweet, warm (19.5% ABV), and long — with a clean, nutty finish. Perfect with dark chocolate, hard cheese, or toasted walnuts. Douro Valley, Portugal. NV.
