Mandirola 1913 traces its origins to 1913 when Enrico Mandirola's great-grandfather acquired a small farm in Casasco, within the Colli Tortonesi region of southeastern Piedmont. Over the past century, the estate has expanded to 11 hectares under vine, focusing on native varieties like Barbera, Croatina, and Timorasso. The 'Praie' Barbera is sourced from the Praie vineyard, reflecting the estate's commitment to sustainable viticulture and traditional winemaking practices.
Grape Variety & Terroir: The 'Praie' Barbera is crafted entirely from Barbera grapes. The Praie vineyard is situated on southwest-facing slopes at approximately 300 meters above sea level, with clay and grey limestone soils. The vines, aged between 10 to 20 years, are cultivated using the Guyot training system, with a planting density of 4,000 plants per hectare, yielding about 6,000 kilograms per hectare.
Vinification & Aging: After hand-harvesting in late September to early October, the grapes undergo fermentation in large vats for 8 to 10 days. The wine is then refined using traditional methods, followed by filtration and bottling. It undergoes further aging in the bottle for 12 months before release.
Flavor Profile: The 'Praie' Barbera offers a vibrant ruby red color with aromas of ripe red fruits, such as cherries and raspberries, complemented by subtle floral notes. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with balanced acidity, soft tannins, and flavors of fresh berries and a hint of spice. The wine's structure and freshness make it approachable in its youth, with potential for short-term aging.
Pairings: This Barbera pairs well with a variety of dishes, including pasta with tomato-based sauces, grilled meats, and mild cheeses. Its balanced acidity and fruit-forward profile make it versatile for everyday meals.
