Birgit Rutledge-Riel, a lecturer of German at the University of Georgia, hales from Krems, Austria, a region of lower Austria known for fine wines and delicious cuisine. She grew up surrounded by loving parents, including a mother who mastered the art of making Austrian delicacies. Childhood holiday memories were filled with the smells and sights of Austrian Christmas cookies like Windbäckerei, Husarenkrapferl, Vanillekipferl, among others. Now a mother herself, Birgit has passed on those traditions to her own children. Each December, she has hosted an Austrian Christmas cookie baking party, transformed their kitchen into a bakery filled with those same smells and sights of her mother’s home, and taught the art of making Austrian Christmas cookies to her children and their contemporaries. With children now grown, for the first time, Birgit brings her mother’s time-tested techniques to the cooking classroom. Participants will leave the class with a box three authentic cookies to share with family and friends as well as a life-long knowledge of this great Austrian tradition.

You'll be making Almond Cresent- Vanillekipferl, Thumb Prints with Apricot Jam- Husarenkrapferl Meringue- Windbäckerei and will go home with 2 doz cookies and of course sample a couple while sipping on a mimosa or drip coffee.
