Chateau Pradeux | Bandol Rouge
-Local Athens Pick-up Only-
Château Pradeaux's Bandol Rouge stands as a benchmark for the Bandol appellation, exemplifying the depth and complexity achievable with Mourvèdre-based wines. Situated in Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer along France's Mediterranean coast, the estate has been under the stewardship of the Portalis family since before the French Revolution, maintaining a steadfast commitment to traditional winemaking practices.
Winemaker & Philosophy
The Portalis family emphasizes sustainable viticulture, cultivating their vineyards organically without the use of herbicides or chemical fertilizers. Sheep grazing in the vineyards during spring naturally manage weeds and enrich the soil. In the cellar, they practice minimal intervention, fermenting with indigenous yeasts and aging wines in large, old oak foudres to allow the terroir's character to shine through.
Grape Variety & Terroir
This Bandol Rouge is composed of at least 95% Mourvèdre, with a small addition of Grenache to enhance aromatic complexity. The vineyards, located mere steps from the Mediterranean, benefit from a warm coastal climate and limestone-rich soils, ideal for cultivating Mourvèdre. Harvesting is done manually, typically beginning in early October, ensuring optimal ripeness and selection.
Flavor Profile
In its youth, the wine presents a deep ruby hue with violet reflections. The nose is expressive, offering aromas of black fruits, leather, and hints of garrigue. On the palate, it is robust and structured, delivering flavors of blackberry, plum, and savory notes, supported by firm tannins and balanced acidity. The finish is long, with lingering notes of spice and earth.
Pairings
This Bandol Rouge pairs excellently with hearty dishes such as grilled lamb, beef stews, and game meats. Its structure and depth also complement aged cheeses and dishes featuring earthy mushrooms or Provençal herbs.
